Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani and Democratic challenger Joanna Mendoza debated in Arizona's competitive CD6, sparring largely over Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act.' Ciscomani touted his early opposition to Medicaid cuts in the bill, then voted for the final version anyway, which still cut Medicaid deeply and is projected to reduce rural hospital funding in the district by $110 million.

SNAP cuts of an estimated $186 billion have already stripped benefits from 5 million Americans, including 770,000 children, and formed the debate's opening question. Ciscomani pointed to eliminated taxes on tips and overtime and an expanded Child Tax Credit as offsets, though an outside analysis found 30% of children nationally wouldn't qualify for that credit expansion.

The two also clashed over immigration, the Iran conflict, and Ciscomani's ties to Trump-era policies including DOGE, with Mendoza arguing his last-minute distancing from the bill came too late to matter.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

Saying you opposed the fire and then voting to pour gasoline on it doesn't make you a firefighter. Ciscomani wants credit for the hospital money while dodging blame for the trillion-dollar hole it's patched into, and that's a neat trick if voters don't do the arithmetic. Mendoza's glass-of-water line about the fire wasn't wrong, it just wasn't as damning as the vote itself.
