White House to press forward with FDA nominee despite US Senate chairman’s concerns

The White House is pushing forward with Dr. Heidi Overton's nomination to lead the FDA despite public skepticism from Sen. Bill Cassidy, chairman of the Senate committee that controls her confirmation path. Cassidy said Overton's lack of managerial experience and her role in a recent HHS executive order weakening vaccine requirements are 'almost disqualifying.'

White House spokesman Kush Desai countered that Overton has spent 18 months coordinating MAHA-agenda policy across HHS, FDA, CDC and USDA and predicted 'swift confirmation.' President Trump, in a social media post, described her as 'SMART and RESPECTED by all' and pledged she'd deliver 'FASTER Cures' and 'MAJOR Clinical Trial Reforms.'

Cassidy has previously voiced doubts about nominees, including RFK Jr. and CDC Director Erica Schwartz, before ultimately voting to confirm both. But the administration has also had to withdraw two prior health nominees, surgeon general picks Casey Means and Janette Nesheiwat, after failing to secure votes.

When the strongest case for a nominee comes wrapped in random capitalization and the phrase 'WORLD LEADER,' it's fair to wonder whether anyone in the building has read her resume past the adjectives. Cassidy's history of grumbling and then folding suggests this may be theater, but 'almost disqualifying' is an unusually blunt phrase for a member of the president's own party to use in public.
