Donald Trump hosted Xi Jinping for a White House state dinner on September 24, the Chinese leader's first U.S. state visit in eleven years, with the two men and their wives posing for photos before a candlelit East Room dinner trimmed in red and gold. Guests included a roster of tech billionaires — Jensen Huang, Lisa Su, Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos — with artificial intelligence billed as a main topic of the visit.

Protesters outside could be heard chanting for Hong Kong, Tibet and political prisoners, while CNN was barred from covering the arrival, joining MS NOW and Politico under the same restriction. Trump toasted a relationship he says has 'never gotten along better'; Xi reached back through Washington's porcelain collection, wartime alliance and Nixon's 1972 visit to make his own case for continuity.

Wardrobe got its own paragraph: Trump in a tuxedo, Melania in a tuxedo-inspired Saint Laurent and Dolce & Gabbana ensemble, Xi in a black suit, Peng Liyuan in red.

A fancy dinner with porcelain talk and a guest list of men who make chips and rockets tells you where the real agenda sits, and it isn't in the toasts. Barring three newsrooms from the driveway while inviting every CEO with a stake in the outcome is its own kind of toast, just not one anybody says out loud. The protesters outside got the closest thing to an honest read of the evening.
