A Russian Aerospace Forces officer, reportedly Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, was shot twice and seriously wounded in an apparent assassination attempt in Russia's Saratov region on September 3, according to Telegram channels tied to Russian security services. Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case; the attacker fled on a motorcycle after firing on Varpakhovich outside a store.

Ukraine's Security Service and Prosecutor General's Office had named Varpakhovich a suspect in absentia days earlier, alleging he ordered the July 2024 missile strike on Kyiv's Okhmatdyt children's hospital, which held more than 600 patients at the time and killed two people.
