Ofgem price cap latest: Households warned of ‘worse to come’ as energy bills rise

Ofgem announced it will raise the average annual household energy bill to £1,723 from October, a roughly £60 increase, with analysts at Cornwall Insight warning of a further £149 jump from January — a cumulative 9% rise. Officials attributed part of the increase to wholesale prices pushed up by conflict in the Middle East.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh acknowledged that both the war and renewable subsidy costs are driving bills higher, a rare admission of a policy trade-off rather than a purely external excuse. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the higher bills 'will have an impact' on households, offering sympathy without a specific remedy.
