Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced his office will not pursue the death penalty against Nick Reiner, accused of killing his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, in December. Hochman said the decision followed conversations with Reiner's siblings and a “careful and thorough review.”
Reiner's public defender says he has a serious mental illness and a long history of substance use, and had reportedly been prescribed medication for schizophrenia before the killings. Rob and Michelle Reiner, longtime opponents of capital punishment, were found dead at their Brentwood home from what the medical examiner called multiple sharp force injuries.
