Ukraine is seeking to buy tens of thousands of 20mm rounds for its F-16 fighter jets' cannons, a cheaper method than missiles for shooting down Russian jet-powered drones, Bloomberg reported. Intercepting a single drone takes about 150 rounds, with daily needs potentially reaching 10,000 rounds, and Kyiv is negotiating with European countries and manufacturers for supply.

Ukrainian F-16 pilots have reportedly destroyed over 3,150 aerial targets to date, including 666 cruise missiles and about 2,500 drones. Earlier reporting indicated pilots faced missile shortages severe enough to rely solely on cannons during some daytime missions, while Belgium agreed to speed delivery of three more F-16s by year's end.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Counting cannon rounds by the ten thousand is what happens when the fancier weapons run short and the cheaper ones have to carry the war instead. It's not glamorous, but a crate of bullets that actually shows up beats a shipment of missiles still stuck in someone's approval process.
