Michigan Rep. Jay DeBoyer, the Republican lieutenant governor nominee running with U.S. Rep. John James, told a Battle Creek audience he might support using a proposed 2027 constitutional convention to ban abortion after 12 weeks, undercutting the state's voter-approved Reproductive Freedom for All amendment. He asked attendees if they'd back him on rolling restrictions back, then afterward told reporters the issue was "settled" and that further debate was a distraction.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and reproductive rights groups called the comments alarming, arguing DeBoyer's walk-back doesn't erase what he said on tape. Planned Parenthood and physician groups noted Michigan voters already settled the question at the ballot box in 2022, which is presumably why DeBoyer needs a convention to unsettle it.

Voters decide in November whether to hold that constitutional convention at all in 2027.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Calling something settled while sketching out how to unsettle it is the kind of two-step you usually only see at a wedding reception. Michigan voters already spoke plainly on this once, at the ballot box, which is exactly the sort of decision politicians love to call final right up until they find a side door. If the door's locked, they'll just keep rattling the hinges and calling it a hypothetical.
