Azov says city remains under Ukrainian control, rejects Russian encirclement claim

Ukraine's 1st Azov Corps said Dobropillia in Donetsk Oblast remains under Ukrainian control, rejecting Russian Defense Ministry claims that troops there had been encircled. Azov said Russian assault groups trying to reach the city are being detected and destroyed before reaching its approaches.

The dispute traces partly to two separate settlements sharing the name Dobropillia, several kilometers apart; Russia says it captured the smaller village and used that to claim an expanding encirclement of the city. The Institute for the Study of War said it found no battlefield evidence backing the encirclement claim, noting the closest confirmed Russian position was over ten kilometers from the city's outskirts.

ISW assessed the claims are partly meant to distract from Ukrainian gains near Lyman, where Ukrainian forces eliminated a Russian salient that had threatened to support an encirclement push toward Sloviansk-Kramatorsk. Ukraine's General Staff continued reporting Russian assaults toward Dobropillia as of Sept. 26.

Claiming a city fell because a village ten miles off shares its name is the kind of trick that only works on people who never check the label.
