Construction workers renovating a house in East Flanders discovered a hoard of gold bars and coins, reportedly worth around €9m, sealed into the cellar walls while laying new sewage pipes.
The property belongs to charity CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, whose director hopes the find could eventually support the charity's work; police have secured the site and warned the public against treasure-hunting there.
Under Belgian law the rightful owner has five years to come forward; if none does, the find would be split between the finder and the property owner, provided it isn't linked to criminal activity.
