Democrat Jonathan Nez is challenging Republican Rep. Eli Crane in a rural Arizona rematch, betting that voter frustration over gas prices, the ongoing Iran war, and cuts to SNAP and Medicaid has eroded support that handed Crane a nine-point win in 2024. Arizona gas prices have risen about 45% since February, now averaging roughly $4.75 a gallon.
Crane's campaign has quietly scrubbed his website's past opposition to funding ‘forever wars,’ a position Nez's camp points to given Crane's repeated votes allowing Trump to continue the conflict unilaterally. Crane did not respond to interview requests for this story.
A Nez-commissioned poll of 500 likely voters found him trailing Crane by just two points, with a 22-point edge among independents, in a district where Republicans hold an 11-point registration advantage. A win would make Nez the first Native American to represent Arizona in Congress.

A campaign website that quietly deletes its own old positions is basically admitting the weather changed and somebody forgot to take the laundry off the line. Internal polls paid for by the candidate always come back sunny, so the real forecast won't show up until November. Still, $4.75 a gallon has a way of making voters remember who promised otherwise.
