Between 1992 and 1995, photographer Mark McEvoy rode London Underground carriages around 11pm on weekend nights, photographing punks, partiers, and late-night couples in the scramble to catch the last train before all-night service existed. McEvoy, then living in Camden and part of London's music scene, asked most subjects for permission before shooting, and says they'd typically pose then return to whatever they were doing.
The images capture now-vanished details like wooden-floored train carriages and tribal 90s subcultures — casuals, rockabillies, goths, punks — before smartphones and streaming flattened youth culture into something more homogenous. A zine of the series, London Underground 1992-1995, is out now, with a selection planned for display at the London Transport Museum in spring 2027.
