A car carrying Russian serviceman Roman Syromyatnikov exploded while driving through Novomoskovsk in Tula Oblast on October 2, according to the monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+, which said streets were blocked off as security services worked the scene.
A second Telegram channel, VChK-OGPU, identified the dead man as Syromyatnikov, a veteran of the 51st Regiment's air assault company who had reportedly been placed on a wanted list by Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office. A local obituary described him more gently, as a teacher and writer devoted to youth patriotic education.
Ukraine's Myrotvorets database tells a different story, alleging Syromyatnikov tortured Ukrainian POWs at Correctional Colony No. 1 and describing him as showing exceptional cruelty and sadism. He had taught safety classes before the war, signed up with the Defense Ministry afterward, was wounded by a drone in 2024, and returned home to Tula Oblast, where his car apparently found him anyway.
