Medical groups, patients sue Trump administration over Medicaid work requirements

Medicaid enrollees from five states and major medical groups sued the Trump administration in federal court in Maryland over new work requirements created by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The law exempts the medically frail, but plaintiffs say a June administration rule narrows that category so tightly that people with cancer, HIV, and severe mental illness could still lose coverage.

Plaintiffs include the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the city of Columbus, represented by the National Health Law Program and Democracy Forward. They argue the verification paperwork itself, not any actual change in who deserves coverage, is what will knock vulnerable people off Medicaid.

Republicans say the requirements push people into work; research cited in the lawsuit says most recipients already work or are in school. Plaintiffs warn cities will absorb the uncompensated cost when people lose coverage and end up in emergency rooms anyway.
