Protesters camped overnight in Madrid's Puerta del Sol after tens of thousands marched to protest the eviction of 87-year-old María del Carmen Abascal from the Retiro apartment she had lived in for over 70 years.

Her rent, once 500 euros, was raised by investment fund Urbagestión to 2,650 euros and later lowered to 1,650, still unaffordable on her pension, according to the Madrid Tenants' Union.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed Abascal directly at a party rally, promising a Royal Decree on housing next Tuesday, a pledge Abascal herself has met with open skepticism about whether officials grasp how common evictions like hers are.
