The annual car festival and cattle fair at Arulmigu Gurunathaswamy Temple near Anthiyur began Wednesday, drawing devotees, farmers and traders for the four-day event held during the Tamil month of Aadi.

The fair, spread over 25 acres with a history exceeding 200 years, features more than 1,200 horses and 10,000 cattle brought from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat, with traders noting Tipu Sultan reportedly once bought horses there for his army.

Over 25,000 traders are expected, with transactions worth several crores anticipated; the district administration has arranged special buses, traffic diversions for heavy vehicles, and police deployment to manage the crowds.
