Germany's AfD won a decisive 43.8% in Saxony-Anhalt's state election, its first outright victory of this scale, well ahead of the incumbent CDU's 17.2%. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded on social media, saying only 'idiots or traitors' in Poland could celebrate the result, and pointed specifically at members of the Confederation and Law and Justice parties.

The vote continues a run of strong regional showings for the AfD in eastern Germany, a trend that has unsettled mainstream parties across the continent enough that a foreign prime minister felt compelled to weigh in on his own opposition's reaction to it.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a prime minister feels the need to publicly scold his own citizens for cheering another country's election, it tells you the fence between domestic and foreign politics has gotten pretty low lately. Tusk is not wrong that cheering a far-right landslide next door is a strange hobby, but calling half his opposition traitors on social media is its own kind of theater. Everybody involved seems to know the cameras are on.
