A London judge set an October 2027 trial date for Vincent Brown, formerly Vincent Bajinya, a 65-year-old former Rwandan government official accused of directing killings during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. He faces charges of conduct ancillary to genocide and six counts of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity, and denies involvement.
The case, the first of its kind brought in Britain, stems from a seven-year Metropolitan Police investigation launched after a 2019 request from the Rwandan government. Prosecutors say Brown directed violence in Kigali between April 6 and 13, 1994, as Hutu extremists targeted Tutsis and political opponents; six other people remain under investigation in connection with the genocide.
Brown lived in Britain for more than two decades, working for a refugee charity and advising the government on refugee nursing, before the charges were brought. A 100,000-pound bail condition set earlier this month has not yet been met, and the trial is expected to last eight to 12 weeks.
