Angie Nixon to pay fine and do community service for staging sit-in at DeSantis’ office

Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon will pay a $250 fine and complete 15 hours of community service to resolve misdemeanor trespassing and resisting-arrest charges from a May sit-in at Gov. DeSantis' office, without pleading guilty or admitting wrongdoing.

The protest followed the Legislature's approval of a new congressional map that Democrats say violates the Florida Constitution; a court has so far let the map stand while a lawsuit proceeds. Nixon's attorneys say her community service will be kept entirely separate from her Senate campaign, with no advance announcement of when or where she completes it.

Nixon, who won her Senate primary last month, now faces appointed incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November.
