President Lula's coalition filed a 117-page complaint asking Brazil's top electoral court to investigate whether Flávio Bolsonaro's presidential campaign benefited from improper U.S. involvement, including alleged coordination with the Rockbridge Network, a conservative donor group co-founded by Vice President JD Vance. The filing also accuses Flávio, running mate Alfredo Gaspar and Flávio's brother Eduardo of abusing power and pushing the Trump administration toward tariffs and sanctions later used to their campaign's advantage.

Separately, Lula's Workers' Party asked Brazil's Supreme Court to order a Federal Police probe into paid foreign-based social media posts promoting Flávio Bolsonaro. A legal expert said a ruling before the Oct. 4 first-round vote is unlikely, though penalties, including office removal or an eight-year candidacy ban, could follow later if wrongdoing is found.

Lula raised the interference concern directly in a UN address the day before the filings. An academic quoted in the piece noted the sovereignty argument already helped Lula in the polls once, when the tariffs first landed.

A foreign tariff threat becomes a domestic talking point becomes a court filing about foreign interference, and somewhere in that loop the actual voters seem almost incidental. Nobody disputes that outside money and pressure showed up, the argument is just about whose side gets to call it meddling and whose side gets to call it diplomacy. Brazil has seen this movie before, and the ending usually depends on who's still standing in October.
