Linus Fu, a former Metropolitan Detention Center inmate deported to China this summer after pleading guilty to a low-level bank fraud role, told Courthouse News he spent months in daily contact with Luigi Mangione, the man who admitted last week to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Fu said Mangione, kept apart from general population reportedly for his own protection given his commissary funds, was quiet, reserved, and unexpectedly unfamiliar with luxury brands despite jokes comparing his prison jumpsuit to Hermès.

According to Fu, Mangione received a flood of mail, magazine subscriptions, and even a New York Times subscription he never read, preferring The Week and passing the rest along. A defense attorney told the outlet celebrity inmates typically get better treatment if they stay out of trouble, which tracks with Fu's account of Mangione's separate housing arrangement.
