Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, is criticizing Republican AG candidate Warren Petersen for campaigning alongside Rev. Jarrett Maupin, a Phoenix activist her office indicted this year on nine felony fraud counts tied to alleged check fraud dating to 2022. Maupin has been actively campaigning for Arizona's GOP ticket, including appearing with Petersen at a Black church.
Mayes' campaign also noted that companies her office is suing or prosecuting, including a trailer park management company facing a multistate lawsuit over conditions at its properties, have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars boosting Petersen's campaign. Petersen's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
Maupin, in a lengthy statement, called the indictment political interference, predicted a pardon from President Trump, and noted he hired Mayes' own 2022 primary opponent as his defense attorney. He also has a documented history: a 2008 fabricated accusation against then-Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon that led to his own federal indictment and guilty plea for lying to the FBI.
