Therapists describe 'parentification' as a family dynamic where a child takes on adult roles, whether caring for siblings, managing household tasks, or regulating a parent's emotions, often stemming from a parent's unmet needs around addiction, mental illness, divorce or financial stress.
One woman described being expected to serve as an emotional sounding board for her mother, aunt and grandmother from a young age, and said setting boundaries as an adult led her family to call her spoiled and ungrateful.
Clinicians distinguish this from normal age-appropriate chores, noting the difference is that the child is carrying more than they should developmentally, often without receiving comparable care in return.
