The Supreme Court's new term, which began Monday, includes a climate case from Boulder, Colorado, where energy companies Suncor and ExxonMobil are trying to block lawsuits seeking to hold them liable for disaster costs tied to climate change; the Trump administration backs the companies, arguing the suits are a regulatory power grab.

Two immigration cases carry major stakes: one over the administration's practice of deporting migrants to third countries under secretive agreements, and one over its policy of detaining immigrants without bond hearings even after years of U.S. residence. Most appeals courts to consider the detention question have ruled against the administration.

Also on the docket: a dozen states' assault weapons bans facing a Second Amendment challenge, an Arizona Republican push for stricter proof-of-citizenship voting requirements after similar federal legislation stalled in Congress, and a Colorado case over whether a Catholic preschool can be excluded from a taxpayer-funded program over its faith-based admissions policy excluding LGBTQ+ families.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A single term with climate liability, gun bans, deportation flights to countries nobody asked for, and voter roll purges is a lot of ground to cover before Thanksgiving, and the administration has found a way to show up on the restrictive side of nearly every one of them. When the same government loses the citizenship-proof fight in Congress and then goes looking for it at the courthouse instead, that is not persistence, that is just trying every door until one opens. The term just started and already reads like a greatest-hits album.
