DeSantis’ commerce secretary approved as Pensacola State College president

Pensacola State College trustees voted unanimously to install Alex Kelly, currently Florida's secretary of commerce and a former DeSantis deputy chief of staff, as the school's next president starting October 19. He succeeds Edward Meadows, who has led the college since 2008.

Kelly has no listed background running a college, but both his own statement and the college's news release stress that his commerce experience aligns with the school's workforce mission. He joins Eric Hall and Anastasios Kamoutsas among DeSantis administration alumni who have moved directly into state college presidencies.

There's a well-worn path in Florida now that runs straight from the governor's office to a college president's chair, and it doesn't seem to require ever having taught a class or run a campus. Trustees keep calling it a search when the destination looks decided well before the vote. Nobody's saying Kelly can't do the job, just that the pattern is getting hard to mistake for coincidence.
