With Karoline Leavitt leaving her post as White House press secretary at the end of August, speculation has centered on candidates including Anna Kelly, Scott Jennings, and Alina Habba, among others floated by USA Today including Katie Miller, Steven Cheung, and Kari Lake. Political scientists Todd Belt and Peter Loge told TNND that Trump prizes presentation, message discipline, and combativeness over the traditional press-relations skillset.

Both experts suggested Trump, who enjoys direct engagement with reporters himself, wants less of a strategic partner and more of a loyal mouthpiece who repeats his views to the press. Loge predicted the pick will likely be someone well known inside Washington's press corps but not to the wider public, and dismissed the idea of hiring someone with independent brand recognition like Lake.
