Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Eduardo Bolsonaro, who has lived in the United States since 2025, to begin serving a four-year, two-month prison sentence for coercion in judicial proceedings, and directed an arrest warrant and cancellation of his passports. The court found he sought U.S. sanctions against Brazilian officials to intimidate them during his father Jair Bolsonaro's coup trial; the conviction became final October 3.
Bolsonaro called the ruling arbitrary and claimed the U.S. would not comply, while accusing de Moraes of timing it to inflame the election ahead of his brother Flávio Bolsonaro's October 25 vote. A law professor noted the ruling was legally inevitable but politically useful to the family's narrative, and that a new Senate stacked with Bolsonaro allies could eventually move to impeach justices or enable a pardon.
Eduardo Bolsonaro already lost his congressional seat in December for absences and was formally dismissed from a Federal Police clerk post in September. Enforcement, if he returns, falls to the same Federal Police now expected to carry out the warrant regardless of politics.
