President Trump criticized Canada on Truth Social after Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected a proposed trade deal and pledged retaliatory tariffs, writing that 'Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one' and accusing it of years of steep tariffs on U.S. farm goods.

Carney called the collapse of talks the result of last-minute U.S. changes that were 'unfair, uneconomic' and undermined the reliability of any deal, and said Canada would impose matching tariffs starting September 8. The U.S. tariffs, up to 50% on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods including wine, dairy, cement, and hockey equipment, took effect Saturday.

Trump did not explain what caused the breakdown, but the exchange follows his repeated musings about Canada becoming the 51st state, an idea Carney and Ontario's premier have both rejected outright.

A president complaining that a neighboring country will not accept annexation-adjacent trade terms is not really doing diplomacy, it's doing branding. The farmers he invokes get tariffs as a talking point while the actual deal that might help them evaporates in a social media post.
