Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin repeatedly called Democratic officials and a Senate candidate 'thugs' on Fox News, tying the label to calls to abolish ICE and describing people ICE arrests as 'the worst criminals you can think of.' He specifically applied the term to Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed after host Brian Kilmeade asked about him directly.

Linguists told HuffPost the word carries a well-documented racial history, evoking stereotypes about Black men even when deployed without an explicit slur, and that its repeated use against political opponents functions as more than a dog whistle. DHS did not respond to a request for comment, and El-Sayed's campaign accused Mullin of running ICE 'as Trump's personal paramilitary force.'

A cabinet secretary who oversees the agency doing the arresting probably shouldn't also be doing color commentary calling his critics criminals, but here we are. Plausible deniability is a hell of a drug when you get to use it from a Fox News couch instead of under oath.
