Jurors in Las Vegas heard a nearly 20-year-old recording of Duane 'Keffe D' Davis describing his role in the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur, including handing the gun used in the killing to another man in his car. Prosecutors say a gang rivalry between the South Side Compton Crips and Mob Piru fueled the attack, which came hours after a fight involving Shakur at the MGM Grand.

Davis, now 63, is the only surviving occupant of the vehicle from that night; his nephew Orlando Anderson and two others have since died. In the recording, Davis also claimed Sean 'Puffy' Combs had offered $1 million to have Shakur killed, an accusation Combs denies and for which he faces no charges.

The defense argues Davis is prone to embellishment and that prosecutors cannot even place him in Las Vegas that night, despite the recorded confession and a matching account in his 2019 memoir. Davis has given the FBI at least three different versions of events since 1998, ranging from total denial to full participation, and the judge has now let jurors hear all of them.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A man who wrote a memoir detailing his own alleged crime and is still mounting a defense of reasonable doubt deserves some kind of chutzpah award, if not an acquittal. The tape, the book, and the decades of contradictions can all be true at once, which is exactly the problem with treating any of them as reliable narration.
