Public WARN filings show a range of employers, including National Express Transit, WellStar Health System, Chime Financial, FedEx, Kroger and Chick-fil-A, planning workforce reductions taking effect in September. The national unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent in July, little changed from a year earlier, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and job postings remain slightly above pre-pandemic levels.

Layoff trackers show 2026 running roughly comparable to 2025: LayoffAlert.org counted 3,191 WARN notices affecting 284,035 workers through August 25, versus 3,356 notices and 301,352 workers at the same point last year. A separate tracker, WARNact.io, counted about 163,273 affected workers year-to-date versus 261,814 in 2025.

Analysts quoted describe a 'low-hire, low-fire' economy driven by inflation, AI uncertainty and interest rates rather than any single policy. WARN data show no sharp acceleration in layoffs under the Trump administration's second term compared with the end of the Biden administration, according to the reporting.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nobody in this piece claims credit and nobody takes blame, which is the most bipartisan thing to happen to the labor market all year. Everyone gets to say the numbers are fine, comparable, or somebody else's fault, and the FedEx driver getting a WARN letter gets none of those luxuries. It is remarkable how resilient a labor market can be described as, right up until it's your name on the list.
