The Institute for the Study of War said Russia's repeated strikes on Kyiv's Pivdennyi Bridge are part of a wider campaign to damage Ukraine's economy and daily life in the capital, using shaped-charge warheads suited to hardened targets like bridge supports. ISW cited a Ukrainian presidential adviser who said Russian forces have begun fitting jet-powered drones with 40-kilogram shaped charges meant to destroy power towers and steel structures.
At least four strikes hit the bridge across October 1 and 2, closing it to traffic entirely and partially restricting the Paton and Metro bridges, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Metro and surface transit across the span were repeatedly suspended as officials cut power to the rail tracks for safety.
