The White House announced a $15 billion Mesabi Metallics steel mill in Iowa, claiming it will create 1,750 permanent jobs, support up to 6,000 construction jobs, and add $95 billion to the economy over ten years. The mill is expected to produce 7.5 million tons of steel annually at first, rising to about ten million, fed by ore from a newly opened Minnesota mine described as the first new U.S. iron ore mine in 50 years.

Most of the release is devoted to cataloging Obama- and Biden-era mining restrictions, including a blocked Minnesota copper-nickel lease, a 20-year mining ban across over 225,000 acres of the Superior National Forest, a revoked water permit, and a blocked Alaska road, all framed as the obstacles President Trump personally cleared.

A steel mill that hasn't poured a single ton is already being credited with $95 billion, which is a lot of gravy to promise before anybody's lit the stove. Maybe it all comes true, and Iowa would be glad of the work. But when most of a press release about a new mill is spent listing what the last two presidents did wrong, you start to wonder how much there is to say about the mill itself.
