2,500 dead and rising — UN says DR Congo Ebola outbreak ‘growing exponentially’

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 2,500 people, with half of those deaths occurring in just the past 20 days, according to the UN's senior Ebola coordinator Julien Harneis.

The outbreak, the country's 17th and now its largest on record, has spread across six provinces and into Uganda, hitting regions with weak state presence and armed group activity. The World Health Organization says it will send 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, though officials caution it is not yet confirmed to work against this outbreak's specific viral strain.
