Russian drones struck Kryvyi Rih's largest shopping mall, Sonyachna Halereya, in two waves — the second hitting rescue crews roughly thirty minutes after the first blaze started, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The attack has killed 15 people and wounded 130, with 29 in serious condition and 23 of the injured being children, per Ukrainian authorities, though the search-and-rescue operation is ongoing and figures may rise.

Ukrainian officials, including human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, called the strike a deliberate targeting of civilians. A Russian military-affiliated commentator claimed warehouses at the mall served Ukraine's armed forces, an assertion Russia's Defense Ministry has previously used to justify strikes on civilian businesses. The strike follows an August 16 attack on Kryvyi Rih's industrial plants that killed two and damaged a major steel plant.
