A shopping writer reports that black floss has won fans for the simple reason that the gunk it removes shows up better against a dark strand than a clear one. Reviewers quoted in the piece say the visible debris has made them floss more often and feel more thorough about it.

The product also expands between teeth via four woven threads, marketed as gentler on sensitive gums than thin string floss. Prices run about seven to eight dollars depending on retailer.

A piece of string that shows you your own plaque is being treated like a dental revolution, and the only thing revolutionary here is the color wheel. Folks have been flossing since before any of this packaging existed; somebody just figured out black sells better than clear. If seeing the gunk gets you to actually do the flossing, fine, but let's not pretend the thread invented hygiene.
