Karl Rove used a Wall Street Journal op-ed to warn Republicans that President Trump's plan to headline the midterms with daily rallies and a heavy ad blitz featuring himself could backfire on the very candidates he intends to help. Rove pointed to Trump's sagging approval ratings and predicted unscripted rally remarks would dominate news cycles and force candidates to answer for the president's comments rather than make their own case.

Rove noted Trump won 2024 by the fourth-smallest margin in 60 years and that support has fallen since, attributing the current strategy to what he called narcissism. His suggested alternative: a more restrained, presidential posture and campaign money spent on ads featuring the actual candidates on the ballot.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When the man who ran two winning national campaigns for the other team's president starts waving his arms about your strategy, that's not a hostile leak, that's a neighbor telling you your barn roof is sagging before it caves in on the livestock. Rove isn't rooting against his own party here, he's doing arithmetic about approval ratings and rally microphones with no script attached. A candidate who can't stop talking about himself long enough to let anyone else win an election is a familiar type, and usually he doesn't much care who else goes down with him.
