President Trump used Truth Social to press the Senate to pass the 'NO MORE CHANGING THE CLOCKS ACT,' arguing permanent daylight saving time would help fight crime, after the House passed the Sunshine Protection Act 308-117 on July 14. The bill now sits with the Senate Commerce Committee, and the Senate returns from recess September 14, leaving 48 days before clocks are set to fall back November 1.

Opposition remains bipartisan: Republican Sen. Tom Cotton has warned permanent daylight saving would mean darker winter mornings, and senators from both parties, including Ted Budd and Amy Klobuchar, have previously voted against similar measures. A 2022 version of the bill passed the Senate by unanimous consent but stalled in the House without a final vote, showing quick Senate action is possible but no guarantee of follow-through.

A president citing crime statistics to justify a scheduling preference is not exactly a rigorous policy process, but it is a very on-brand one. Given that an earlier version of this same bill already died of neglect once, the smart money is on Americans changing their clocks again come November.
