Andy Burnham blames Brexit for ‘low growth’

Andy Burnham, addressing MPs for the first time as Prime Minister, blamed Brexit for compounding a longer economic decline he traced back to the 1980s — centralized political power, privatized economic power, deindustrialization, and austerity that hollowed out local councils. He said Brexit then added a decade of low growth and stalled regeneration on top of that.

Burnham said there was 'no doubt' Brexit had hit growth, and argued that an isolationist approach would prevent Britain from getting what farmers need. He stopped short of endorsing rejoining the EU or single market, consistent with Labour's manifesto pledge made during the Makerfield by-election.

The comments come ahead of a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and a broader 'EU reset' summit expected in November, where the question of closer ties is likely to resurface.

Diagnosing a decade-old wound while ruling out the obvious treatment is a peculiar kind of honesty. Burnham gets credit for naming Brexit as a culprit, but naming it while promising not to touch it is less honesty than theatre with better lighting.
