A federal court in Illinois ruled that an author and TV producer can proceed with defamation claims against Google over AI Overviews that allegedly claimed he was serving a life sentence for murdering three women.

His actual record shows a 1997 conviction for conspiracy to distribute drugs, arising from his work as a prison informant helping the FBI investigate a suspected serial killer.

The court found the AI-generated statements could reasonably be read as factual, and that the man plausibly alleged actual malice by claiming he repeatedly told Google the summaries were false, yet similar statements kept appearing.

A machine invented a triple murder for a man whose real crime was helping the FBI, and the company selling that machine kept it running after he complained. That is not a glitch, that is a business built on confidence with no accountability attached. Somebody down the road ought to ask why the fix for ‘the computer said something false’ took a lawsuit instead of a phone call.
