Digital Student Voice, a platform built by the youth media outlet Studentarija, lets North Macedonian students anonymously report problems like delayed scholarships, dormitory conditions, and rights violations. It grew out of years of unsolicited messages landing in Studentarija's Instagram inbox, including one case where an Ohrid dormitory went without electricity for over 30 hours and students feared reporting it openly.

In its first month the platform logged about 100 reports; by month three that had nearly tripled to roughly 300, notable in a country of about 53,000 university students. Recurring complaints include delayed state scholarships, abrupt cuts to subsidized student meals, and dormitories with rodents, insects, and prolonged outages of hot water and electricity.

Studentarija says it plans to compile these reports into public findings and formal correspondence with institutions, betting that aggregated, anonymous complaints carry more weight than isolated ones. The team also runs public polls asking students to rank which problems feel most urgent.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Anonymity as a workaround for accountability says less about the platform's cleverness than about the institutions that made anonymity necessary in the first place. If cockroaches and unpaid scholarships only get addressed once they're aggregated into a spreadsheet and mailed to officials, the individual student's voice apparently wasn't worth much on its own.
