Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon, fresh off her primary win, attacked GOP incumbent Ashley Moody at a St. Petersburg church, citing a leaked grand jury report finding the DeSantis administration misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer money in 2024 and that Moody, as attorney general, was aware of and authorized the settlement diverting funds to the Hope Florida Foundation. No indictments resulted from the investigation.
Asked directly by Spectrum News whether she'd sign the same settlement knowing what she knows now, Moody didn't answer the question, instead citing her endorsements from 64 of 67 sheriffs. Nixon also linked Moody to roughly 440,000 Floridians dropping ACA coverage after enhanced subsidies expired under Trump's tax and spending law, and to Medicaid cuts projected near $1 trillion over a decade.
Nixon cited a non-peer-reviewed Yale study claiming a single-payer system could save over 100,000 lives and $1 trillion; Moody, for her part, said she won't debate Nixon, citing Nixon's past quotations from Assata Shakur, a Black Liberation Army member convicted of murdering a New Jersey state trooper.
