The controversy began when some students objected to Chief Justice Surya Kant being invited as convocation chief guest, citing his remarks and police conduct during a Delhi protest; the BCI responded by demanding NALSAR identify organizers and then moved to block enrollment for the entire 2026 graduating batch.
The BCI later withdrew that action, and the Supreme Court, with CJI Surya Kant on the bench, stepped in Friday to affirm students' right to protest peacefully and order the bar councils to stop targeting them.
