California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a package of election bills Saturday covering ballot seizure penalties, vote-by-mail delivery protections, deepfake restrictions, and expanded language access under a new California Voting Rights Act.
The bills followed real incidents cited by Democrats, including a Riverside County sheriff's seizure of 650,000 ballots and a Supreme Court order this week halting mail-ballot delivery restrictions. Newsom tied the signings explicitly to what he called Donald Trump's history of election interference, invoking the 2020 Georgia call and the January 6 pardons.
Separately, Newsom vetoed a bill that would have required state agencies to justify in writing any requirement that employees work in-office rather than remotely, saying it pushed telework policy in the wrong direction.

Signing a stack of election bills and then holding a press conference about a rival three thousand miles away is a two-for-one that governors have been running since before television. The bills themselves sound sensible enough on their face, felonies for grabbing ballots seem like low-hanging fruit nobody should need to debate. But when the signing statement reads like a campaign trailer, you start to wonder which part was the governance and which part was the audition.
