Sweden's armed forces have adopted a new air force concept that would see Gripen fighter jets armed with Taurus cruise missiles strike Russian rear areas rather than limit operations to defense, according to Air Operations Center chief Col. Carl Bergqvist. The Taurus missiles have a range up to 500 kilometers; Sweden is also considering missiles with a 2,000-kilometer range, well more than the roughly 1,200 kilometers separating Stockholm and Moscow.
The plan includes dispersing aircraft and using ordinary roads for takeoffs and landings, plus strengthened air defense, satellites and drones. It arrives alongside warnings from Danish, Czech, Latvian and Swedish intelligence services of a small but growing risk of Russian sabotage or limited military action against NATO neighbors.
