A 16-metre yacht called Tai Tam was crossing the South Pacific, roughly 250 nautical miles from Norfolk Island, when a sperm whale struck the hull and knocked the boat sideways.
Four sailors aboard, including Jemma and Jeremy Cooper, Terry Hetherington and Martin Jaffre, were thrown from their positions by the impact; the vessel went down and the crew spent hours adrift in a life raft awaiting rescue.
No casualties were reported among the humans, and the whale's travel plans remain unconfirmed.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A whale does not read the cruising guide and does not care whose insurance is due for renewal. Out on open water the ocean still runs the show, and every so often it reminds somebody with a very nice boat that it never signed any agreement. Glad the sailors made it; the yacht did not get a vote.
