Estonia is relocating its 1st Infantry Brigade from Tapa to Jõhvi, within 50 kilometers of the Russian border, and building a new base near Narva meant to house 1,000 troops, according to the Financial Times. Tallinn has also signed contracts for nine U.S. HIMARS systems and nine South Korean Chunmoo rocket launchers, both with roughly 300-kilometer range, putting St. Petersburg within reach.
Estonian officials told the FT they do not expect a full NATO war but worry about a limited incursion testing Article 5, particularly around the Russian-speaking city of Narva. The country's active force is about 4,200 soldiers backed by a wartime reserve of up to 230,000, nearly a fifth of its population.
