Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, at a G20 finance ministers press conference in North Carolina, claimed Iran no longer controls the Strait of Hormuz and said the country's regime is in a death spiral. Asked whether the Iran war Trump launched in February is nearing its end, Bessent turned on the assembled press instead, saying the media should be ashamed for publishing Iranian claims and calling reporters an ally of the regime for taking a lying government at face value.

Social media users quickly noted that Bessent works for an administration that has itself drawn years of scrutiny over false statements, with critics online calling the remark rich and the jokes self-writing. No fact-check of Bessent's own Strait of Hormuz or death-spiral claims accompanied his remarks at the podium.

A man who wants the press to stop repeating unverified claims might start by bringing along something a reporter can check. Two big statements from the podium, neither one with a scrap of paper behind it, and the fault somehow lands on the people taking notes. That trick works about as well as blaming the scale for what the bathroom mirror already told you.
