A fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad killed at least 14 infants, according to the prime minister, with local broadcaster Geo TV putting the toll at 15. The blaze broke out around 7 a.m. on the third floor's mother and child health ward, reportedly caused by a fault in the air conditioning system.

Sixteen newborns were in the ward at the time; one was rescued. A parent who lost her child said all doors to the ward except one were shut, and another parent said there was no fire security present. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an investigation.
