Two Florida Democrats join every Republican in Congress in voting to condemn socialism and the DSA

The House passed a resolution denouncing 'socialism in all of its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America,' 220-192, with two Democrats voting present. Florida Democrats Kathy Castor and Darren Soto, both newly redrawn into districts Trump carried by double digits, joined six other Democrats and every Republican in support.

Most Democrats voted no not over the socialism denunciation itself but because the resolution also urged passage of the SAVE America Act, which Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called 'the top legislative priority of far-right extremists' and a MAGA effort to 'rig the midterm elections.' Florida Republicans, meanwhile, have been citing DSA-backed candidate Angie Nixon's Senate primary win over Alex Vindman as proof the state Democratic Party has been 'infiltrated.'

Sponsor Jeff Crank called it 'a simple up or down vote,' though it arrived bundled with legislative language that made it anything but simple for the party it was ostensibly needling.

Nothing says confidence in your district like voting to distance yourself from a party's ideological wing while your own seat has been redrawn out from under you. The resolution's real function wasn't denouncing socialism; it was giving Florida Republicans a floor vote to wave around in attack ads, and two Democrats obliged.
